The event is a significant moment in the biblical narrative of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In John 19:17-18 of the New Testament, it describes the scene where Jesus is nailed to the cross. Here is an explanation of the passage:

John 19:17-18 states: “And he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.”

Bearing his own cross: After Jesus was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate, he was made to carry his own cross to the place of execution. The cross was a heavy wooden structure, typically consisting of a vertical beam (known as the upright or the stipes) and a horizontal beam (known as the crossbar or the patibulum).

The Place of a Skull (Golgotha): This was the location where the crucifixion took place. It was called Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull” in Aramaic. The exact location is uncertain, but it is believed to have been a hill outside the city walls of Jerusalem.

Crucifixion: Crucifixion was a brutal and agonizing method of execution in the ancient Roman Empire. The person being crucified was nailed or tied to the cross, and they would hang there until they eventually died from asphyxiation, exhaustion, or other factors.

Two others: John’s account mentions that two other individuals were crucified alongside Jesus. This detail is significant because it fulfills the prophecy mentioned in Isaiah 53:12, where it is foretold that the Messiah would be “numbered with the transgressors.”

Jesus between them: Jesus was positioned in the middle, between the two criminals. This placement further emphasizes the fulfillment of prophecy and symbolizes the redemptive purpose of Jesus’ crucifixion?being the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

The crucifixion of Jesus is a pivotal event in Christianity, representing the sacrificial death of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and the redemption of mankind. It is seen as an act of immense love and atonement, central to the Christian faith.

It is the purpose of this series is to have the observer experience and find hope and meaning in the profound and captivating depiction of the Passion, Burial and Resurrection of Christ. This collection honors the life of Jesus Christ and is a testament to his faith, His sacrifice, and the enduring power of His love. Don’t miss the opportunity to bring one of these paintings into your home or church as an original work of art or as a print and be moved by its timeless message.
