The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem is an event described in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. It marks Jesus Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem shortly before his crucifixion and is often celebrated as Palm Sunday in Christian tradition. Let’s look at the accounts in each of the four Gospels:
Matthew 21:1-11: Jesus sends his disciples to bring a donkey and a colt. They lay their cloaks on the animals, and Jesus rides into Jerusalem. The crowds spread their cloaks and palm branches on the road, shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Mark 11:1-11: Jesus and his disciples? approach Bethphage and Bethany near the Mount of Olives. Jesus sends two of his disciples to get a colt tied up in a village. They bring the colt to Jesus, and he rides it into Jerusalem. The people spread their cloaks and leafy branches on the road, while shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”
Luke 19:28-44: Jesus tells two of his disciples to go ahead and find a colt tied in a village. They find the colt as Jesus described and bring it to Jesus. As he rides into Jerusalem, the people spread their cloaks on the road, and when they approach the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples begins to rejoice and praise God with loud voices for all the mighty works they had seen. They say, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” Jesus weeps over Jerusalem, predicting its destruction.
John 12:12-19: A great crowd gathers in Jerusalem for the Passover feast. Jesus finds a young donkey and sits on it, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah. The crowd that had come for the feast hears that Jesus is coming, so they take palm branches and go out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” The Pharisees express concern over the growing popularity of Jesus.
In all four accounts, Jesus enters Jerusalem in a manner that fulfills prophecies and is greeted by a crowd of people who recognize him as the Messiah. The people’s shouts of “Hosanna” signify praise and adoration, and the spreading of cloaks and palm branches on the road is a sign of honor and welcome. This event sets the stage for the subsequent events of Jesus’ final week, including the Last Supper, his arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection.
